About us

Kaputtniks

> Macht kaputt, was euch kaputt macht<

Ton Steine Scherben, 1969

The word Kaputtnik first appeared in the United States in 1957 — a satirical blend of the German word “kaputt” (“broken”) and the Slavic suffix “-nik”, coined by American journalists to mock a failed U.S. rocket launch during the early space race. About a decade later, the term resurfaced in German underground and countercultural movements, redefined - this time carrying a sense of irony and a message of rebellion.

To us, Kaputtniks are those who have continuously rebuilt and in that process redefined themselves.
Those who wear their flaws with dignity and pride, turning them into character — because they know authenticity will forever outshine perfection. Kaputtniks find beauty in rough edges, and freedom in being unapologetically themselves.

We see destruction as an invitation to rebuild, a chance to go beyond the limits we have set for ourselves and in doing so become something truly great.

Don‘t hide your chaos — create from it!

Our pieces begin as hand-drawn sketches, later printed by a small print shop using OEKO-TEX-certified colours on GOTS-certified organic cotton blanks by Stanley/Stella.
We don‘t do mass production, everything we create is with intention and therefore takes time — like an artwork — reflecting our core philosophy of creating wearable art

Kaputtniks stands for slow creation in a fast world.
We believe sustainability is not a trend to follow but a moral duty to live and create by. That’s why we emphasize working only with partners who uphold maximum transparency in their production processes, enabling us to offer a product that remains true to both ecological responsibility and ethical integrity.

Our pricing reflects what stands behind each piece: sustainable materials, ethical production and the personal craftmanship invested in each step. As a small independent artist, every risk and cost is carried directly by the creator - which makes every piece a commitment to concious creation and consumption.

There is a certain intimacy in showing your scars but Kaputtniks wants to inspire you to keep showing them, keep wearing your heart on your sleeve (or your back ;)) - and wear it with pride and joy. Like you would wear your favourite T-Shirt.
